Need a little confidence boost right about now?
How often do you feel like you’re “winning” in your business?
Perhaps you’re laughing out loud right now, thinking, “Winning??!!? What’s that?”
Or maybe, you’re now thinking over a few things in your business you’d definitely regard as “wins”:
· Maybe you absolutely love your staff
· Maybe you are obsessed with your branding and know your marketing messages are on point
· Maybe you love who you work with
· Maybe it’s the designs of your products that make you proud on the daily
· Maybe it's that you're doing something you're super passionate about with your business...
We can often be so fixated on what’s not working, or things we feel we’re “losing” out on, or not doing well in, rather than looking for, or even seeking out the wins.
Yesterday, I witnessed my eldest son's basketball team win their first game. They’ve played maybe six games so far and this was their first win. Now, we always discuss how having fun is the MOST important thing at basketball games, far more than winning. That said, seeing the confidence boost that win gave these kids was beautiful to watch. Perhaps because of the previous games it felt that much sweeter to all of them. There’s something brilliant about watching kids — or, in fact, anyone — realise that they are capable of things they’ve been dreaming about.
Running a business is a lot like a basketball game — you can’t stand still too long or you risk losing momentum, you need others around you to make it fun, you will win games and you will lose games, and you may have to take many, many, many shots and put in a whole lotta effort before you finally feel like you’ve won a goal. After all, didn’t Michael Jordan once admit, "I've missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I've lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I've been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I've failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed"?

So, what are you winning at right now in your business? OR what action might you take in the next few weeks to help you move toward this? Where might you gain a bit of a confidence boost or mindset shift by a win, no matter how small? We all have those things we have been holding off on doing, sometimes tedious jobs that just need to get done to help us feel more on top of things. We also all have big goals that we need to take small, and consistent, steps toward. For some of my clients a win has been has been moving from a solo operator to a company, for others the win has resulted from them finally making the leap to hire staff, while for others their win has come from learning how to say no and set boundaries. What might make you feel like you're winning and give you a little confidence boost?

Now, before I finish up, I have to stress again that winning isn't the be all and end all. It is the confidence that comes with any win, no matter how small, that makes the seemingly impossible, possible. When the kids were tapping elbows with the other team, I heard one of them whisper to my son, "I didn't think we would ever win a game! Wow!". It is that shift in mindset that I witnessed yesterday, and witness so many times with clients, that is most important. As the great Mahatma Ghandi once said, "Man often becomes what he believes himself to be. If I keep on saying to myself that I cannot do a certain thing, it is possible that I may end by really becoming incapable of doing it. On the contrary, if I have the belief that I can do it, I shall surely acquire the capacity to do it even if I may not have it at the beginning.”
What might a small win do for you?
