The one thing you need to cultivate in 2020
At the beginning of the year we all start making statements like “This is my year to finally do X” or “‘My word of the year is X” or “In 2020 I’m going to stop doing Y” or “I am going to kill it in business this year by doing Z”.
But how are all of those new year’s resolutions holding up now?
These are all very well and can help propel and prolong that New-Year-New-You feeling, but such goals and ideals are seldom achieved without the introduction of one important factor: Helpful Habits.
A habit is something we do almost without thinking. It’s a routine of behaviour that we do so often that it becomes second nature. Think brushing your teeth, putting on your seatbelt or making coffee first thing in the morning.
Every small business owner will have habits that help and habits that hinder their success.

Some common habits that can hinder your success as a small biz owner include:
Scrolling social media instead of working
Comparing ourselves to others
Waiting to ask for help when it’s required
Leaving things to the last minute
Avoiding difficult conversations
Failing to delegate
Not setting boundaries
Underpricing for fear of missing out on a sale / client
Selling with features only
Investing in education, but not implementing any of it
Some common habits that can help your success as a small biz owner include:
Time blocking your week
Checking emails at specific hours of the day
Delegating / getting external help
Limiting time spent on social media (a tool like tomato-timer.com is great for this, as is the alarm on your phone)
Selling with benefits
Asking for help
Doing one thing every day that scares you (such as sending an email to a potential collaborator or pitching yourself for a podcast)
Batching content
Implementing any education you gain
Templating processes
Prioritising time for face-to-face connections with staff
What are your habits? How will these impact the goals you have determined are key to your success in 2020, and beyond? How might you go about changing, tweaking or removing these habits so they help, rather than hinder, your business success?
Take ten minutes this week and consider filling in this Helpful Habits Tracker then sticking it somewhere you'll see on the regular, to help you not only create goals, but cultivate the habits that will help you achieve them.
