Episode transcript:

Hello and welcome to Episode 73 of the My Daily Business Coach podcast. Today, we are talking about a quick tip episode. I'm excited to get stuck into this. I know some of my episodes have been a little not so quick lately.

And, you know, my editor is like hovering above the 10-minute mark, Fiona. So I'm going to try and make this one quick. In it is a bunch of questions that I know will be really useful for you, particularly at this time of year and after the kind of year that we've had. So let's get stuck into it. And of course, if you want to make sure that you don't miss out on any of these tip episodes or the small business interviews or my longer coaching ones, make sure you subscribe. All right. Let's get into the episode.

All right, so today's quick tip, tool or tactic is really, I guess, tip and maybe tactic as well to ask yourself to kind of run through these questions when it comes to your mindset. And I know mindset is just such a overused term, especially in the small business space and startup and entrepreneur and all those things. But it's such a huge part of running your business and it's definitely something I talk to my clients about.

It's something I mentioned a lot in my Sunday emails. If you're not on that, make sure you hit subscribe over at mydailybusinesscoach.com. I send out a bunch of business insights every single Sunday night. But yeah, mindset can be the make or break. And in my book, the very end of the book, spoiler alert does talk about the tips and tools and platforms and all this good stuff. But it also talks about how your mindset is the absolute most important thing when you're running a business.

So I'm actually going to read out part of that page. That's the very end of my book. And sorry if you're reading this and you're like, oh, but not really spoiler alert because I talk about it all the way through.

But I literally say, you know, it's amazing and wonderful to have others believing you. And I know how lucky I am to have such a supportive husband. But ultimately, it is you who needs to believe in you. You need to believe that you can and you will make things happen in your business. It is you who needs to ensure you put in the time to work out what you most want, who you almost serve, what you most want to be known for, and how you'll make it happen.

Your mindset will be the maker or breaker of your business. Your mindset will make the journey between you, where you are now, and where you want to be an adventure or an ordeal. And as I often tell my sons, you are in control of how you view the world around you. So when I wrote that, you know, I stand by that. Absolutely. And I know that sometimes people can be like, well, it's not just mindset and the money needs to come in.

This needs to happen. You need to have the right stuff. You need to have the right product. But I really, really do think that all of those other things are far easier when you've got your mindset in the right mindset, really, when you got your head in the right space.

So sometimes people like, well, how do I know what my mindset is? Or they might think I'm pretty positive. I'm pretty outgoing, I'm quite positive minded, and I come from a growth mindset.

I'm not a fixed mindset. And what I asked people to do is go through five key questions and I'm just going to list them out now. And of course, these are in the show notes. So if you want to come back to them and maybe work through them in a journal or something, feel free to go and access those. They'll be at mydailybusinesscoach.com/podcast/73. So these are the five quick questions to work through when it comes to potential mindset blocks that you might have

1.      How do I feel when people talk about money now?

Money, money, money. I have a whole course on your money. Money is one of the first things that I talk about with clients. And before we even start coaching, they have to tell me where they're at with revenue, where they're at with profit. What do they hope to get? What's the gap? How would they close that themselves? Money is huge. It's important to business.

You don't have a business if you're not making money unless you I don't know who won the lottery or something. And you can just do something. It doesn't really matter if it brings in income, but for most people, really get honest. How do you feel when people talk about money? Do you feel like they're being greedy? Do you feel like they're being boastful? Do you feel like it's something no one should talk about? Do you feel that you get competitive or that you think, oh, gosh, they're earning so much more than me, I'm a loser.

Really think about how your mindset could be coming in the form of money blocks, preventing you from charging what you're worth, preventing you from seeing the potential of what your business could be. That's the first question.

2.      How do I feel about taking risks?

And this is a big one. You know, I've had lots of people over the years say to me, I wish I could start a business or more so, you know, in the last twenty years, I used to write a lot for key publications and people would say, oh, I'd love to be a writer and you can be. You literally just need to contact an editor, go for it and keep contacting them until somebody says yes. And often they'd be really amazing writers. That was what's so hard. They were such good writers and they just lacked that ability to take the risk of potentially hearing a no.

I mean, that's all that is. And most people are nice. They're not going to be like assholes. Excuse my language. They're going to say, no, it doesn't fit. Could you think of some other topics or just not get back to you at all? Like, so how do you feel about taking risks? Are you somebody who completely shies away from it? And if you are, then how is that showing up as a block in your business?

3.      How do I feel when somebody in my space or industry does well?

So that could be they put out a book that does well, they have a podcast as well. They might launch a new course that's very similar to yours and go on to tell everybody how much they brought in. They might buy something. They might buy an investment property. They might buy a new bag. They might buy something else. They might hire more people than you. How do you feel about that?

And does it make you feel, "oh, there's not enough to go around" or does it make you feel excited because you can see what they're doing and then what's possible for you?

4.      Am I more curious than competitive?

And I've talked about this before in many of the podcasts, but curiosity is key to a successful business. So, again, like question three, how do I feel when someone in my space does well? Am I more curious than competitive? That's question four. Do I come at things as a competitive like, oh, they think these or you let your ego go into all sorts of places, or do I come from a state of curiosity?

Like how did they do that? Why did they do that? Oh, how might I learn from that?

5.      Do I really think that anything is possible?

And again, I'm going to flick through to the front of my book. So my book, Passion, Purpose, Profit, I dedicated this book to my mum, my incredible mum.

And I put in a quote that my mom used to always say to myself and my three siblings, you can do anything you put your mind to. She used to say that on repeat.

And I know I was incredibly lucky to have parents like I had, but my mom used to always say, "Fiona, anything you want is possible. Anything you put your mind to can happen - anything." And so I do have that idea in my head. And I'm incredibly lucky, again, to grow up that obviously I have my own blocks around things that I'm working on and definitely have mindset issues in some areas of my life. But on the whole, I really do think that anything's possible.

I don't necessarily think you could be a business coach if you don't have that mindset, because how are you going to help your clients see that things are possible? But really asking yourself, do I really think anything is possible? Am I in this business really with an abundance mindset and an idea that, yeah, I could start a podcast. I could write a book, I could do this, I could launch into another territory, I could create a product that sells really well. I could learn how to use Shopify or whatever other platform it is, or I could hire somebody who's going to be kick ass in my team. Do you really think it's possible or when you say those things, do a whole lot of questions come up in your mind? Do you start second guessing yourself?

So that is it for today's Quick tip episode. It's five quick questions. I'll just recap them.

1.      How do I feel when people talk about money now?

2.      How do I feel about taking risks?

3.      How do I feel when somebody in my space or industry does well?

4.      Am I more curious than competitive?

5.      Do I really think that anything is possible?
