Hello and welcome to Episode 81 of My Daily Business Coach podcast. Now, today is a little bit different. It's still a tool or tactic. It's actually going to be a tip, but it's a little bit more, I guess you could say it could be applied to life as well as business. So let's get stuck into today's Quick Tip episode and find out what I'm actually talking about.

All right, so if you've listened to this podcast before, thank you so much. If you have read my book, Passion, Purpose, Profit, you will know that I have two children and one of them is about eight years old. And he goes to primary school. And quite often he comes home from primary school and tells me just really interesting, just lovely stories about things that he's learnt. And lately, every time we see leaves, he will then remind me that, “You know, mom, leaves on the ground actually really help the roots of the trees underneath. And I thought that he's mentioned this many, many times. He loves telling me this story. And originally I was like, “Really? Do they?” And I actually Googled it. And not that I didn't believe him, but I actually wanted to learn more. And so I Googled it. And I found this really cool blog called Soils Matter. I think it is Soil Matters.

And they had an article about leaving the leaves alone and kind of how leaves. So in autumn or fall, depending on where you are listening to this, you know, obviously certain trees will shed their leaves and the leaves fall down. And what actually happens is that some of those leaves become kind of mouldy, but within part of that mould is actually really great nutrients that actually help the soil below and the bug life and everything else like that.

And it made me think about business and it being the start of autumn here in Australia, which is one of my favourite seasons. It really made me think about the things that we need to shed as business owners and really considering the roots of our business.

What's most important, what gives us a strong foundation upon which to build, what makes us feel confident, what makes us feel that we can go and do this new type of marketing or create this new product or service offering? What is it that is going to help us kind of stand our ground in the same way that, you know, these beautiful trees that we're lucky enough to have around here, hundreds of years old, and they're just incredible. And you think, well, the amount of leaves that had to fall to create the nutrients which helped the soil, which helped these trees stay strong.

So obviously, I'm not, you know, a botanist or somebody who's really great with plants. So if I'm completely making mistakes here, just bear with me. But it does make me think about in terms of business, what are things that we're potentially scared of letting go or that we think actually, you know, we need to keep that on even though it's kind of run its course or we've utilised that system or we've utilised that marketing channel and we don't need to anymore or it doesn't have the same impact that it once had. Or maybe it's a relationship that, you know, is not necessarily working for you or a partnership or a collaboration that has run its course.

What are the leaves in business life and potentially in your personal life as well that you need to let go?

I know that I had a huge response to the podcast episode that I did some time ago with Dr Hannah Korrel, who is the author of How to Break Up with Friends.

And if you want to catch that episode, go and do that. After you listen to this, it is episode 66.

And I think the reason that I had such a huge response to it is that we don't often think of this stuff. We don't often think of things like breaking up with friends or in the kind of analogy that I'm talking about today, letting these sort of leaves drop away that are no longer serving us. And if we let those things fall to the ground, how much more energy might that give us in terms of our confidence, our foundations, other things that are going to benefit us long term?

So I know it's a little bit of a bit of a different one today. But, yeah, I would love for you to consider in your own life, in your business, what are the things that you're holding onto? It could be, like I said, it could be a system or process. It could be a particular marketing channel. It could be staff. It could be relationships. It could be, you know, a particular client that actually just does not lock you up. And every time you have to meet with them, you just feel sick or it's just draining. It could be, you know, all sorts of things. It could be Facebook groups that you're in that you don't utilise, that you don't like hearing from. It could be people on Facebook that you're always hitting the snooze for thirty days button.

And actually you should probably just unfollow and, you know, bite the bullet. It could be how much time you're spending on particular social media channels or really looking at your analytics and seeing what's working. What could I potentially let go of? It might even be as much as going into your marketing calendar or your content calendar and calling and being like what what isn't going to serve our audience or what is not lighting us up as a team or as a business and just letting those things fall to the ground and kind of believing that if those things fall to the ground, it's going to give you more time and energy back for the things that do light you up, that do make you excited.

And yeah, I guess just keeping in mind, especially with this autumn season here, this is part of life and it's part of, you know, nature to let things go and and know that by letting them go, there's room for better things to come in. So I know a little bit different, but I hope you found that useful.

If you did, I would love you to share what you're going to let go of and come and let me know on Instagram. I'm just at @mydailybusinesscoach, so send me a dm there.
