Hello, and welcome to episode 147 of the My Daily Business Coach podcast. If you're listening to this in real time, and you're in my home state of Melbourne, hope you're enjoying a lovely public holiday, where you can actually go somewhere like, wow, this has been such a long time coming. So no, just like, celebrating with you, wherever you are. I will be celebrating with my wonderful mother-in-law. It's her birthday around this time. And yeah, can't wait to just go and be with family and just enjoy connection and being in people's houses again, oh, my goodness.
So so long since we've been allowed to go anywhere, especially not into people's houses. There's something lovely about just sitting somewhere that you know, you're not going to get moved from. So yeah, just massive, high five to everyone out there celebrating today in Melbourne with friends and family. And also to everyone around I know, in New South Wales and all other parts of Australia, there's lots of places around the world as well, where the restrictions are lifting. So yeah, just giving a you know, group high five everyone here. But today, it is a quick tip episode. And this is actually around Instagram. So if you use Instagram at all, for your business, or even for your personal life, if you're not necessarily using it as a business profile, but maybe have a personal profile, or maybe have both like me, then you definitely want to stick around.
But before I get into that, I just want to acknowledge the traditional owners and custodians on the land on which I am fortunate enough to live and work and play and record this podcast. The Wurundjeri people of the Kulin nation and I pay my respects to their Elders past, present and emerging. So today's episode is a quick one. But it may just change your life. Woah, that's a massive call, but it could never know. So let's get into it, shall we?
So I use Instagram for my business. If you are not connected with me go over to @mydailybusinesscoach on Instagram, send me a DM I love love love hearing from people who listened to this podcast and just people in general. But yeah, recently, I went through a bit of a kind of Instagram issue, I guess, where I had sort of had a complaint or or something had happened. And I basically, it really shocked me because I just felt very vulnerable, because I just sort of thought I mean, I talked to people all the time about do not put everything on Instagram, you know, Instagram's, not a marketing strategy. It's just one channel, etc, etc. And I definitely, you know, that is definitely how I work. Instagram is just one communication channel, my big ones, this podcast, and my Sunday email. So again, if you want to be on the Sunday email and you're not there, then you can go on over to mydailybusinesscoach.com/subscribe, and you can get on that. And actually, on that point, after this whole Instagram issue, I sent an email with so much more information than what I'm going to share today's podcast. But anyway, back to the point.
So this thing had happened on Instagram. I had been sort of notified by Instagram that this thing had happened. And I just went into, Oh, my goodness, I need to change this, I need to do that I need to update my security. I need to do all these things. But one of the things that I hadn't done for so long, probably for like years, which is really bad, I should have should have been doing it every couple of months is to do a data dump.
So what is a data dump? So basically, what can happen on Instagram is, you know, like so many of us. We take photos using the Instagram app itself. We make stories using the Instagram app, we're not necessarily saving those to a camera roll. And so and we're also you know a lot of people Don't use like a scheduling tool. So a lot of people are writing content within the Instagram app itself. And then, you know, if anything should happen to your account, and you don't have a data dump, then you lose all that information, you lose all that great stuff. Maybe you have like inspirational things on there that you're like, God, that post was amazing. I wish I could repurpose that. And yet, you don't have it. Because if something happens to Instagram, as I'm always preaching about, you have no control. Instagram, like every other social media platform can be changed overnight, and you don't get to control that. So and I've seen this firsthand, I know, some wonderful woman I know that had come to one of my workshops years ago, had gone through this exact thing, somebody hacked her account, and she lost 1000s and 1000s of really beautiful photos of her product. She lost all the comments, she lost all the DM information messages,
She had lost all these great stories, these video content that she could have repurposed on her website. And it was very, very stressful, it was horrible. And you see that all the time, you see people going, like, "Oh, my God, someone's hacked my account, oh, my goodness, bla, bla, bla, this has happened, all that has happened." And so what I want to talk about today is a tip, a tactic, and a tool - my gosh, all three. But it's really to look at Instagram, and make sure that you are regularly doing a data dump.
So a data dump is basically Instagram allows you to download all the stuff that you've put on there on your account. And all you need to do is literally go to your Instagram profile, then you go to Settings, then you go to Security. And then you'll click to data in history. And then underneath that, download data. And all you need to do is input an email address, they send you an email shortly afterwards saying, here's a link, it's kind of like a wetransfer, and then you go, and you have a few days to download it. And then after that, you have to, you know, put in another request. But it could be something that like I'm doing now, it's actually scheduled even. So every quarter, we're doing a data dump, which means that should you know, goodness, my fingers crossed everything, knock on wood, anything should happen to Instagram, that all the content we have created for it is captured somewhere. So I literally just got the data dump, put it onto a hard drive. And it's all there.
And it just means that, you know, it's something for us to also go through and see what we can repurpose for other platforms and places that we market and connect with people. But it just gives us that added security that I'm not losing everything. Because I know, I know, unfortunately, so many small businesses build their whole business, on Instagram, and they're not looking at other ways to market. Like God, I could like go on and on and on. And I do usually go on and on and on about how this is such a huge problem. And anyone who's gone through my Marketing For Your Small Business Course, knows how much I bang on about do not put everything on social media. But the fact is a lot of people do. And they're not backing up those photos, they're not backing up messages, they're not backing up all this great information that can be used for their business, and that they have a right to download off that platform in a regular way. Or even at all. I know that a lot of people when I've talked to them about this, or and I sent it in my Sunday email as well. A lot of people commented and not back to me. And thank God, I did not know that you could do this on Instagram.
So just to reiterate how to do that: If you're on Instagram, you would go to your Instagram profile. So usually just sort of clicking the you know the little logo or icon that you've got in the bottom right hand, when you're looking at your like Instagram app on your phone, you click on that you go to your profile, you click on the three bars at the top, on the top right hand, so it kind of like a little menu there. You click on that you go to Settings, then you go to Security, then you look at data and history. And then there's a option download data. And again, you just put in your email address, you'll be sent an email, and then it's just like a wetransfer, you click and you get access to all of your data.
So that is it for today's quick tip episode. So I would love to know if you are someone who regularly downloads their data from the social media platforms like Instagram, or if you're like, oh my gosh, I did not even know you could do that.
